Abstract expressionist artist – and Friend of the RWA – Laurel Smart has a new exhibition coming up at HOURS Gallery…
Laurel’s work has undergone a transition in the last year. Gestural marks and colour drive her painting. It is both intuitive and disciplined. Freedom from the convention of subject allows her to explore the elements that create abstract imagery. Her work is often large, complex and layered.
Laurel’s connection to abstract expression has been incubating throughout a rich and varied career as a painting tutor. Encouraging others to examine the creative process and draw from deep within themselves has nourished her own creativity.

In the ‘Moments Captured’ exhibition at Bristol’s HOURS Gallery, Laurel’s energetic, abstract canvasses celebrate the expressive quality of paint, with large, colourful meditations on a transient moment. This is a new body of work.

The preview is on Friday 1st Feb 6pm – 10pm. Laurel will also be in the gallery on Saturday 2nd Feb and Sunday 3rd Feb between noon and 5pm. You can meet the artist to discover what inspires her.
